Health Fair Program

Hundreds of people took part in the 6th Annual Lowndes County Health Fair, Family Fun Day, and Progressive Agriculture Safety Day, April 26th at the Jackson-Steele Community Center in Whitehall.

“Registered participants received medical screenings, visited the information fair and enjoyed a host of other activities,” said Judge Terri Bozeman-Lovell, chairman of the Lowndes County Children’s Policy Council. “It was a tremendous service to the community and would not have been possible without the generous support of our non-profit organizations, agencies, and individual volunteers.”

Screenings were available for eye sight, blood pressure, glucose, HIV, and cholesterol. The Community Care Network with the Care-A-Van that provides medical treatment throughout many of the underserved counties of our state was on site with Dr. Leon Davis and his staff to provide additional medical screenings.

Sponsors for this event included the Lowndes County Children’s Policy Council, Lowndes County Head Start, Lowndes County Health Network and Alabama Cooperative Extension. These organizations partnered with local physicians, local agencies, non-profit organizations, service providers, and area businesses.

Approximately 65 vendors provided giveaways and information to the participants and there were drawings all day for gifts donated from vendors, including a DVD player donated by Head Start and two bicycles donated by Health Services, Inc. and The Family Medical Center.

The Lowndes County Head Start staff created fun for citizens of all ages and provided over 500 meals to the participants.  The fun activities included tattoos for the kids, Hearts the Clown the balloon artist, and two huge balloon bounces.  SABIC Innovative Plastics had a group of volunteer engineers on hand to provide the Magic of Chemistry show to many enthusiastic children and adults.

Entertainment included the Lowndes County Praise Dancers. The addition of Progressive Agriculture Safety Day sponsored by Alabama Cooperative Extension System added a new excitement to the event this year.

All participants received a t-shirt and hands-on safety demonstrations from exhibitors which included Alabama Power, Lowndes County Sheriff, Drug Task Force, WAKA-TV Channel 8, Department of Conservation, Alabama State Troopers, and Alabama Cooperative Extension System.

Hyundai and SABIC Innovative Plastics were the corporate sponsors for this year’s event. They and many other organizations, agency staff and individuals donated their service to make this a great event.  Donations were also provided by e5 Pharma, Health Services, Inc., Chick-fil-a, The Family Medical Center, Community Care Network, City of Whitehall, Cornerstone Community Outreach, Deborah Bloodworth, Whitehall Community Volunteers and The Golden Ambassadors.

“This event has been a huge success over the past six years having been held in Hayneville, Fort Deposit and White Hall,” said Judge Lovell. “It has moved around the county so that all citizens will have the opportunity to participate in the health screenings and be provided information from the various agencies and providers that serve Lowndes County.”

“It also would not have been possible without the helping hand of Cornerstone Community Outreach and the City of White Hall,” added Arthur Nelson, director of Lowndes County Head Start.  “Katie Jackson, executive director of Cornerstone Community Outreach was instrumental in providing a wonderful venue for the event, as well as, assistance with the lengthy setup and cleanup process.”
