Policy Council
October 8, 2008
District Judge Terri Bozeman Lovell called the Lowndes County Children’s Policy Council meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. on October 8, 2008, at the Lowndes County Law Library.
The meeting was attended by Judge Terri Bozeman Lovell, District Judge, Sherlisa Barnes, Lowndes County BOE; Debra Bush, Chief Juvenile Probation Officer; Mel Brackman, Lutheran Ministries; Sam Cooper, BancorpSouth Bank; Angela Daniel, All Kids; Katina James, STEP Program; Liletta Jenkins, Department of Children’s Affairs; Vera Larkin, Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services; Rebecca Leadingham, Montgomery Area Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy; LaShawn Long, Mental Health; Mary Anne Martin, Alabama Character Initiative; John Olsen, FDIC, Audrey Peterson, Lowndes County DHR, and Shakirah Tajuddin, Lowndes County DHR.
Judge Bozeman Lovell welcomed Council members and introduction of members and guests followed. The members approved the minutes of the June 18, 2008, meeting.
Recognition was made to the recent graduates of Lowndes County Leadership Class 2 and an announcement was made to all CPC members of application submission. An overview of the 2008 Lowndes County Needs Assessment and the Priorities were reviewed by the members. Comments and suggestions were made and a decision was made to include the full report on the CPC website and to review our comprehensive list of needs and priorities at the December and February meetings.
Angela Daniel gave a report regarding Kid Check which is a nine-step screening for school age children. Lowndes County, under the leadership of Nurse Jennie Coker, would be holding the first Kid Check for our region under the Rural Action Commission and the events would be held October 24th at Jackson Steele, October 31st at Fort Deposit Elementary, and November 7th at Central Elementary. Members of the CPC were asked to participate and assist as volunteers at the events.
Liletta Jenkins invited all members to participate in the Richard Durrough Leadership Academy to be held in Auburn on December 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Vera Larkin announced that Children’s Rehabilitation Services would have an open house on October 29th and everyone was invited to come by and see their new offices at 560 South Lawrence Street in Montgomery.
A power point presentation was made of the Helping Lowndes Families Initiative. Judge Bozeman Lovell announced that applications are being accepted for the position of Director for the program and plans are that the position would be filled by December 1st.
The meeting concluded at 4:30 p.m.
