Minutes of Lowndes County

Children’s Policy Council 

 

December 2, 2009

 

District Judge Terri Bozeman Lovell called the Lowndes County Children’s Policy Council meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. on December 2, 2009, at the Lowndes County Law Library.

 

The meeting was attended by Dr. Daniel Boyd, Superintendent of Education; Judge Terri Bozeman Lovell, District Judge, LaSaundra Chappell, MAMHA; Sam Cooper, Bancorp South Bank; Angela Daniel, All Kids; Katina James, First Years Child Development Center; Liletta Jenkins, Department of Children’s Affairs; Vera Larkin, Children’s Rehab Services; LaShawn Long, Mental Health; Mary Anne Martin, Character Council; Audrey Peterson, Lowndes County DHR; Gloria Simmons, Director Family Service Center of Lowndes County; Dan Therrien, Fort Deposit Library; Rachel Waters, Director Lowndes County DHR.  

 

Judge Bozeman Lovell welcomed Council members and introduction of members and guests followed.  The members approved the minutes of the October 7, 2009, meeting. 

 

Discussion of the newly released Kids Count data was distributed to the members in attendance.  Discussion regarding the statistics and the status of Lowndes County children followed at length.  Liletta Jenkins, Field Director for Department of Children’s Affairs led much of the discussion and suggested that she contact VOICES and have a representative visit our next meeting to explain how the data is collected and analyzed. 

 

Members made announcements regarding the following upcoming events for December.  Hyundai has agreed to sponsor the Christmas clearinghouse for the foster children and needy families in Lowndes County.  Donations will still be accepted from the community.  The Family Service Center of Lowndes County will also be sponsoring a number of needy families through the Toys for Tots program at the Family Guidance Center of Alabama.  The Hayneville Christmas Parade will be held on December 5th at 12:00 p.m.  Dollars for Scholars will be holding their annual Walk-a-Thon from Russell School to the Hayneville Square at 9:00 a.m. on December 5th.  The Family Service Center has secured a grant for an adult literacy program.  The Fort Deposit Christmas Parade will be held on December 12th and fireworks can be bought in Fort Deposit with proceeds going to the Fort Deposit Library between December 15th and 31st.  Dr. Boyd announced that graduation exit exam training would be taking place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.  Dr. Boyd also announced that the Drama department is making plans for an early Spring drama.  

 

2010 calendars and small gifts were distributed to the members as a token of appreciation for their hard work during the year.
