Minutes of Lowndes County

Children’s Policy Council 

 

August 5, 2009

 

District Judge Terri Bozeman Lovell called the Lowndes County Children’s Policy Council meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. on August 5, 2009, at the Lowndes County Law Library.

 

The meeting was attended by Dr. Daniel Boyd, Superintendent of Lowndes County Public Schools; Judge Terri Bozeman Lovell, District Judge; Mel Brackman, Lutheran Ministries; Debra Caldwell-Bush, Chief Juvenile Probation Officer; James Collins, ABC Board, Charlie Colvin, River Region United Way; Sam Cooper, BancorpSouth;  Angela Daniel, All Kids; Liletta Jenkins, Department of Children’s Affairs; Vera Larkin, Children’s Rehabilitation Services; Rebecca Leadingham, Montgomery Area Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy;  Mary Anne Martin, Alabama Character Initiative; John Olsen, FDIC; Audrey Peterson, DHR; Gloria Simmons, Family Service Center of Hayneville; Rachel Waters, DHR Director; Frank Winkler, SAYNO.  

 

Judge Bozeman Lovell welcomed Council members and introduction of members and guests followed.  The members approved the minutes of the June 3, 2009, meeting. 

 

Liletta Jenkins, field director for the Department of Children’s Affairs, provided an overview of the results of our 2009 Lowndes County Needs Assessment.  The members present reviewed the summary of the assessment and had lively discussion regarding the results and the action steps that the council will take over the next year. 

 

Announcements were made regarding upcoming events in the community which included:

August 22nd - Back to School Rally set for Hayneville Town Square 9:00-12:00

August 22nd – Okra Festival in Burkville12:00 noon until

August 8th – 11th Annual Jonathan Daniels Pilgrimage – Hayneville Town Square followed by a ceremony at the Lowndes County Courthouse.

 

Application deadline for the position of Director of the Lowndes County Helping Families Initiative extended and the members were asked to forward the announcement to any possible prospects. 

Angela Daniel announced that Kid Check would be held in the coming months at the high schools in Lowndes County and all members were asked to participate in supporting this effort.  The Children’s Policy Council supports this effort financially rather than having the annual health fair.  Angela Daniel also announced the changes to the All Kids application which would extend the requirement for acceptance from 200% poverty level to 300% poverty level. 

 

Gloria Simmons, Director of the Family Service Center of Lowndes County made an announcement regarding the 50th Anniversary Celebration for the agency. 

 

Several other council members gave updates on activities taking place at their agencies.

 

The next meeting was scheduled for October 7, 2009, at 3:00 p.m., Lowndes County Law Library.

 

The meeting concluded at 4:30 p.m.
