Children’s Policy Council
February 6, 2007
District Judge Terri Bozeman Lovell called the Lowndes County Children’s Policy Council meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. on February 6, 2008, at the Lowndes County Law Library.
The meeting was attended by Judge Terri Bozeman Lovell, District Judge; Gloria Jean Canty, SKIP, Inc.; LaSaundra Chappell, Mental Health; Sam Cooper, BancorpSouth; Angela Daniel, All Kids; Daniel Davis, ABC Board; Layla DeLoach, Family Sunshine Center; Lakeisha Griffin, Family Service Center of Hayneville; Katrina Hunter, ABC Board; Jamie Keith, ACPTP; Liletta Jenkins, Department of Children’s Affairs; Adrian Johnson, Attorney at Law; Vera Larkin, Children’s Rehabilitation Services; Rebecca Leadingham, Montgomery Area Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy; LaShawn Long, MAMHA; Katanga Mants, Auburn Extension Services, Mary Anne Martin, Alabama Character Initiative; Christopher Moultry, Medicaid; John Olsen, FDIC; Audrey Peterson, DHR; Mae Richmond, Lowndes County Health Network; Shakirah Tajuddin, DHR; Dan Therrien, Fort Deposit Library; Rachel Waters, DHR Director.
Judge Bozeman Lovell welcomed Council members and introduction of members and guests followed. The members approved the minutes of the December 5, 2007, meeting.
A report was given from the Health Fair Committee. A date was determined for Saturday, April 26, 2008, at the Jackson-Steele Community Center in Whitehall, Alabama, from the hours of 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Judge Lovell thanked the committee for their hard work and acknowledged Mae Richmond for accepting the position as event chairman. It was further announced that in addition to Head Start and the Children’s Policy Council, the Lowndes County Health Network and Alabama Cooperative Extension System would be event sponsors.
A special presentation was given by Angela Spackman of the Adullam House. The video presentation of the services her organization provides to incarcerated mothers was moving and inspired many follow-up questions from those in attendance.
A presentation was also given by Jamie Keith of the Alabama Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. Mrs. Keith offered to work with Lowndes County in their development of a plan to address the rising number of teen pregnancies in our county.
John Olsen, Sam Cooper and Adrian Johnson gave an update on the IDA program in Lowndes County. Progress had been made in the past months with the assistance of United Way of Central Alabama, BancorpSouth Bank and the Family Service Center of Lowndes County to develop and implement the program in Lowndes County.
Members and guests made announcements regarding upcoming events and activities in the community.
